A Burlington couple has been found guilty of first-degree murder and multiple charges related to the abuse of two boys in their care, following what the court described as a “lengthy and difficult” trial. The verdict was delivered by Justice Clayton Conlan, who concluded that both accused were responsible for the death of a 12-year-old boy in 2022 and the prolonged abuse of his younger brother.
The accused, Becky Hamber, 46, and Brandy Cooney, 44, had pleaded not guilty to all charges. The pair had been caring for the boys for several years and were in the process of attempting to adopt them. The identities of the victims remain protected under a court-ordered publication ban.
The trial, which began in mid-September, included testimony from dozens of witnesses, including social workers, medical professionals, educators, and police. Both accused, along with the surviving younger brother, also took the stand during the proceedings, offering key testimony that shaped the court’s findings.
Justice Conlan, presiding over the case in Milton, noted the complexity and emotional weight of the evidence presented. Closing arguments were heard in late March, culminating in the guilty verdict on all counts.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the severity of the crimes and the vulnerability of the victims, raising broader concerns about child protection systems and oversight in cases involving long-term care arrangements.
