PM Carney Picks Louise Arbour As Governor General

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to name Louise Arbour as Canada’s next governor general, according to sources cited. The expected appointment would place one of the country’s most distinguished legal and international figures in the ceremonial role representing the Crown.

Arbour brings an extensive resume, having served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Canada and previously as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She also held a pivotal role as chief prosecutor for international tribunals addressing war crimes in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, solidifying her reputation on the global stage.

In recent years, Arbour was tasked with leading an independent review into sexual misconduct within the Canadian Armed Forces, further reinforcing her profile as a figure trusted with sensitive institutional reform. She is currently in private practice.

Born in Montreal, Arbour is fluently bilingual in both English and French — a notable distinction following outgoing Governor General Mary Simon, whose tenure drew scrutiny over language proficiency. Simon’s five-year term is set to conclude in July, paving the way for a new appointment.

If confirmed, Arbour’s appointment would mark a continuation of Ottawa’s trend of selecting highly accomplished public servants with strong international credentials to serve in one of Canada’s most symbolic leadership roles.
