PM Trudeau shares video on Canada-US relations amid Trump’s taunts calling Canada the “51st state” and praising Wayne Gretzky

December 27: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has finally responded to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Canada becoming the “51st state.” On Thursday, Trudeau shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, posted alongside a brief six-word message: “Some information about Canada for Americans.” The video, narrated by Tom Brokaw, offers an overview of Canada’s politics, landscapes, and key moments in its history.

This is the first direct response from Trudeau to Trump’s series of posts about Canada joining the U.S. Trump has been mocking Canada on social media, even sharing a doctored image showing his father, Eric Trump, scrolling through an Amazon cart with items like Canada and Greenland. Trump has also praised the idea of Canada joining the U.S., claiming it would lead to major tax cuts, business growth, and military protection.

The post comes after a call from former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney to “stand up for Canada.” Trudeau has largely stayed silent since his finance minister’s resignation on December 16 and has faced increasing pressure from MPs to step down. He is said to be reflecting on his political future during the holiday season.
