India’s best-known election strategist, Prashant Kishor, has entered electoral politics with his first-ever victory, winning the Bankipur by-election in Bihar and securing a seat in the state assembly.
The 49-year-old Jan Suraaj founder defeated the BJP in Bankipur, a constituency the party had held continuously since 1995. The seat became vacant after longtime BJP legislator Nitin Nabin resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
Kishor’s victory marks a dramatic turnaround after his newly formed Jan Suraaj Party failed to win a single seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election. The by-election success has reignited debate over whether his party can emerge as a credible political alternative in the state.
Before entering politics, Kishor built a reputation as one of India’s most influential election strategists. He played a key role in Narendra Modi’s successful 2014 general election campaign before later working with several opposition parties, including helping the JD(U)-RJD alliance defeat the BJP in Bihar in 2015 and advising Mamata Banerjee during her 2021 West Bengal election victory.
After leaving the Janata Dal (United) in 2020 over differences regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act, Kishor launched a statewide foot march across Bihar in 2022 before founding the Jan Suraaj Party in 2024.
During the Bankipur campaign, Kishor focused heavily on youth unemployment, migration and Bihar’s economic challenges, while directly challenging Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary’s leadership. He framed the election as a choice between his vision for change and the state’s existing political leadership.
The constituency includes several colleges and coaching centres, with nearly one-third of its voters under the age of 30. Political observers say the result may indicate growing support among young voters frustrated by unemployment and limited opportunities, though many caution that it is too early to draw broad conclusions from a single by-election.
While the victory does not immediately reshape Bihar’s political landscape, it gives Kishor his first elected office and provides fresh momentum for Jan Suraaj ahead of future electoral contests.
