Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has said he would like to contest the next Punjab Assembly election against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann if the party high command asks him to enter the fray.
Addressing a Congress event in Faridkot on Wednesday, Warring dismissed suggestions that he should instead contest against Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, saying the Akali leader was already “lying low.”
“The party high command will decide who contests and from where, but if I am asked to contest, I would like to fight against Bhagwant Mann. I will fight, and he will come to know,” Warring said.
Warring’s remarks come amid continuing factionalism within the Punjab Congress, with a section of leaders led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi opposing the party high command’s decision to retain him as state president.
The Congress leadership recently reaffirmed Warring as Punjab Congress chief while appointing Channi as chairman of the party’s campaign committee ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Speaking at a separate “Har Booth, Congress Mazboot” programme in Moga, Warring launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government, calling Bhagwant Mann the “worst-ever chief minister Punjab has had.”
He accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order, alleging that gangster activity, lawlessness and drug abuse have reached unprecedented levels under the current administration.
Warring also alleged that the Punjab government had misused the police to crack down on peaceful protesters, including teachers, MGNREGA workers, sanitation workers, farmers and government employees, and urged voters to remove the Mann government in the next Assembly election.
