2 FIREARMS RECOVERED, 2 DEAD, 5 INJURED; POLICE ANNOUNCE ARRESTS IN SALSA CASE

Toronto police have arrested the suspects believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair street festival, Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced on Thursday.

Speaking during an unrelated news conference, Demkiw said the arrests were made late Wednesday evening and praised homicide investigators for their work on the case.

“I’ve got to give a note of gratitude to our homicide team who have been working tirelessly, non-stop around the clock,” Demkiw said, adding that more details will be released at a news conference on Friday once investigators complete the next stage of the investigation.

The shooting occurred on July 11 during the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival, where police estimated 13,000 peoplehad gathered.

Investigators previously described the attack as targeted. The victims were identified as 25-year-old Shaquan Quashieand 20-year-old Cesar Vernaza, both of whom died. Four other people were injured and taken to hospital.

Following the shooting, organizers cancelled the festival’s second day as police continued their investigation.

The Salsa on St. Clair festival is one of Toronto’s largest cultural events, celebrating Latin American music, food and culture.
