A Toronto police officer was seriously injured after being shot early Thursday morning while responding to a robbery involving a stolen e-bike.
Toronto police said officers were called to the area of Bloor Street East and Sherbourne Street, near St. James Town, at approximately 3:21 a.m. on August 13 following reports of a robbery connected to an e-bike.
Police said officers located a suspect in the area, and during the encounter, one officer was shot. The injured officer was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
A suspect was arrested at the scene, and police recovered a firearm. The investigation remains ongoing.
A man who spoke with CityNews said his e-bike had been stolen earlier in the night near Dundas and Shuter streets. According to his account, two suspects approached him while he was riding home from work, threatened him and took the bike.
The man said he contacted police and used a tracking device attached to the e-bike to provide officers with updates on its location. He later travelled toward Bloor Street after the tracker indicated the bike had stopped there, but said the confrontation between police and the suspect had already occurred by the time he arrived. He did not witness the shooting.
Police have closed Bloor Street East in both directions between Sherbourne Street and Parliament Street as investigators continue to examine the scene.
