A Toronto police officer was shot and seriously injured Thursday morning while executing a search warrant connected to an ongoing national security investigation into the March shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at an apartment building on Martha Eaton Way in North York. Police were carrying out a search warrant when an exchange of gunfire erupted, leaving one officer wounded.
The officer was transported to hospital via trauma run and underwent surgery.
According to reports, the search warrant was linked to the investigation into a March 10 attack on the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto. During that incident, two suspects allegedly fired multiple rounds at the diplomatic building before sunrise. No injuries were reported, but the attack prompted a major investigation involving local and federal authorities.
The U.S. ambassador to Canada at the time described the shooting as “deeply troubling,” while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said investigators were examining whether the incident met the threshold of a terrorist act.
Thursday’s raid was part of that continuing investigation. Authorities have not released details about the suspect involved in the exchange of gunfire or the circumstances that led to the officer being shot.
A second individual was also injured during the operation and transported to hospital for treatment.
