U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, marking their third face-to-face meeting and their first at the mayor’s official residence. The meeting comes as Trump travels to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Mamdani’s communications director Anna Bahr said the discussions will focus on issues affecting New York City and its residents. The White House has confirmed the meeting but has not provided further details about the agenda.
The meeting represents another chapter in an unexpectedly functional relationship between two politicians with substantial ideological differences. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, and Trump exchanged sharp criticism during the 2025 mayoral campaign, but their interactions since Mamdani’s election have included discussions about areas where the federal and municipal governments could work together.
Their first face-to-face meeting took place at the White House in November 2025, shortly after Mamdani won the mayoral election. Despite their previous clashes, Trump said afterward that he wanted Mamdani to succeed and suggested the incoming mayor could surprise some conservatives. The two discussed issues including housing and affordability.
Mamdani returned to Washington for another meeting with Trump in February. Housing again featured prominently, with Mamdani presenting Trump with a mock New York Daily News front page reading “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” a reference to the famous 1975 “Ford to City: Drop Dead” headline. Mamdani’s aides said the gesture was intended to emphasize the potential impact of additional federal housing investment in New York.
Significant policy disagreements nevertheless remain. Immigration has been a persistent source of friction, with Mamdani criticizing elements of the Trump administration’s enforcement policies while maintaining that he is willing to continue discussions with the president on issues affecting New Yorkers.
Monday’s meeting is taking place during a particularly busy diplomatic week in New York. Trump is scheduled to address the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday and hold a series of meetings with international leaders during his visit.
The Gracie Mansion meeting signals that Trump and Mamdani intend to maintain direct communication despite their political differences, with housing, infrastructure, affordability and immigration among the issues that have featured in their previous exchanges.
