27 August: While York Region continues to be one of the safest communities in Canada, 2024 has seen a rise in violent crimes, prompting York Regional Police to reassure residents that measures are being taken to address these concerns. As of August 27, 2024, the region has witnessed a 92% increase in gun-related crimes and a 106% rise in carjackings compared to the same period in 2023.
Police Chief Jim MacSween attributes this surge in violence to organized crime groups, which have been heavily involved in auto thefts across the country since 2020. Ongoing conflicts in the tow truck industry have also contributed to increased gun violence and arson, with some groups using these tactics to intimidate rivals. Access to illegal firearms remains a major concern, and York Regional Police are advocating for stricter bail reforms and tougher sentencing for firearms offenses.
Chief MacSween emphasized that tackling violent gun crime is a top priority, stating, “Our focus is on deploying all available resources to combat this trend and ensure that residents of York Region are both safe and feel safe.”
Despite the rise in gun violence, auto thefts have declined by approximately 33% in 2024, thanks to large-scale initiatives and joint-task force operations led by York Regional Police. To further address the uptick in carjackings, the police department is launching a dedicated carjacking unit next month and rolling out “Autoguard 2.0,” a comprehensive auto theft prevention campaign to educate the community on safeguarding their vehicles.
Additionally, York Region residents will see an increased police presence as more officers are deployed throughout the area to enhance community safety.
So far in 2024, there have been 15 homicides in York Region, with five occurring since July 25. Most of these homicides were targeted, and arrests were made quickly. However, police acknowledge that this trend may cause fear and anxiety within the community.
Hate crimes have also increased by 4% year-over-year, raising concerns among police. York Regional Police remain committed to maintaining the region’s diversity as a strength and have been in ongoing communication with faith leaders and community groups.
Chief MacSween urged residents to work closely with the police to keep the community safe, encouraging people to be vigilant, connect with neighbors, and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
York Regional Police express gratitude to the community for their ongoing support in combating crime. Residents with any information are encouraged to contact York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers. For emergencies or crimes in progress, residents should call 9-1-1.
