As Canada’s 2026 census reaches its reference date, some Canadians are reportedly refusing to complete their census forms as a form of protest against Prime Minister Mark Carney and the federal government. Social media posts have shown ripped-up forms and envelopes marked “return to sender,” with critics citing privacy concerns and frustration over recent political developments.
Mark Gerretsen, MP for Kingston and the Islands, urged Canadians to complete the census, emphasizing that the data helps governments plan schools, hospitals, housing, transit, and infrastructure projects. He warned that undercounting communities could lead to reduced federal funding, weaker representation, and fewer public services, particularly in smaller municipalities.
Statistics Canada said early response rates remain comparable to previous census cycles despite misinformation concerns. The agency reiterated that completing the census is mandatory under the Statistics Act and that failure to comply could result in fines of up to $500. Officials stressed that all census data remains strictly confidential and is protected by law.
