Rapper LL Cool J and R&B artist Jazmine Sullivan have pulled out of their scheduled performances at Philadelphia’s Fourth of July Wawa Welcome America Festival in solidarity with nearly 10,000 striking city workers.
The artists were set to take the stage on Friday, but both have opted not to perform as the strike, now in its fourth day, continues to impact essential city services. In a video posted to social media, LL Cool J explained his decision: “There’s absolutely no way that I can perform, cross a picket line, and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage.” He added, “I hope the mayor and the city can make a deal. I hope it works out.” LL Cool J also expressed his commitment to fans, saying he plans to remain in Philadelphia in case an agreement is reached in time for him to still perform.
Meanwhile, the effects of the strike are mounting. Trash has accumulated in several neighborhoods, and more than 30 staffers from the Medical Examiner’s Office have been ordered back to work due to a growing backlog of bodies awaiting processing.
