Ontario Introduces One-Year Teacher Training Program With 80 Day, On-the-job Training

Ontario is moving to a new 12-month teacher education model as part of efforts to address workforce needs while maintaining professional training standards for future educators.

The change, announced by the Ontario government earlier this year, will take effect on May 1, 2027. Under the new framework, the current four-semester Initial Teacher Education Program will be replaced by a three-semester consecutive program completed over 12 months. The mandatory 80-day practicum requirement will remain unchanged.

The Ontario College of Teachers, which regulates the teaching profession in the province, says the transition is intended to maintain high professional standards while streamlining the path to certification for future teachers.

At its June 11 meeting, the College Council approved proposed amendments to Ontario Regulation 347/02, the Accreditation of Teacher Education Programs Regulation, to support implementation of the new model.

According to the College, the regulatory changes are designed to ensure a smooth transition for teacher candidates and education faculties while preserving the quality of teacher preparation programs across Ontario. The amendments also include provisions to maintain continuity for existing teacher education programs during the transition period.

In addition to the program restructuring, the College approved updates aimed at simplifying accreditation reviews and clarifying regulatory requirements for teacher education providers.

Further amendments to Ontario Regulation 176/10, known as the Teachers’ Qualifications Regulation, are expected later this year to align certification requirements with the new program structure.

The Ontario College of Teachers said it will continue working with the Ministry of Education and post-secondary institutions throughout the implementation process. Teacher candidates, certified educators, and other stakeholders are being encouraged to monitor the College’s website for additional updates as details of the transition are finalized.

The province says the new model will help accelerate entry into the teaching profession while maintaining the practical classroom experience and professional standards required for certification in Ontario.
