Ottawa’s Boosted Grocery Benefit Payments Begin Today

Eligible Canadians are set to receive the latest quarterly payment of the federal government’s enhanced Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit beginning today, providing additional financial support to lower-income households.

The benefit, formerly known as the GST/HST Credit, is issued every three months through the Canada Revenue Agency and targets Canadians with low and modest incomes.

Earlier this year, eligible households received a one-time payment equal to 50 per cent of the benefit’s annual value. In addition, the federal government has increased regular quarterly payments by 25 per cent for the next five years as part of its affordability agenda.

The amount each household receives varies according to income, marital status and the number of dependent children. Annual payments range from several hundred dollars for individuals to more than $1,000 for some families.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the enhanced benefit in January, describing it as a key affordability measure designed to help Canadians manage rising grocery prices and the increasing cost of everyday essentials amid ongoing economic uncertainty.

Payments are being deposited automatically into the accounts of eligible recipients or mailed by cheque, depending on how individuals receive their Canada Revenue Agency benefits.
