di Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye have signed a joint defence agreement that commits all three countries to treat an armed attack against any one of them as an attack against all three, significantly deepening their security cooperation amid escalating tensions across the Middle East.
The agreement, named the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, was announced on Friday in a joint statement shared by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Saudi state media.
According to the statement, the pact reflects the three countries’ commitment to strengthening collective security while promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond.
The agreement follows nearly a year of negotiations and comes amid heightened regional instability. Saudi Arabia has faced attacks linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, raising concerns about regional security, energy exports and the kingdom’s ambitious economic development plans.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by army chief Asim Munir, travelled to Saudi Arabia ahead of the announcement and performed the Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also travelled to the kingdom on Friday for talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The three countries already have extensive bilateral military relationships. Pakistan has provided training and technical assistance to Saudi forces for decades, while Pakistan and Turkiye have cooperated on military training and defence equipment. Saudi Arabia has also strengthened defence ties with Turkiye, including a major agreement to purchase Turkish drones.
The new pact brings together three countries with significant but different military and strategic capabilities. Pakistan is a nuclear-armed state, Turkiye is a NATO member with a substantial domestic defence industry, while Saudi Arabia brings considerable economic and geopolitical influence.
Analysts cited in the report described the agreement as potentially marking the emergence of a new regional security architecture, combining military deterrence with diplomatic cooperation.
Officials and analysts stressed that the agreement is defensive and is not formally directed against any particular country. Its stated objective is to enable Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye to collectively respond to security challenges while supporting greater stability across the region.
