Bank Of Canada Governor Macklem Faces House Finance Committee After Rate Hike To 2.5%

The Bank of Canada has increased its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.5 per cent, marking its first rate hike since 2023. The decision follows seven consecutive meetings during which the central bank maintained its policy rate at 2.25 per cent. Governor Tiff Macklem said the increase was necessary to prevent rising energy costs from driving broader inflation across the Canadian economy.

Canada’s annual inflation rate climbed to 3.1 per cent in September, largely due to surging global oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The central bank is concerned that sustained increases in energy costs could spread to other goods and services, making inflation more difficult to control. Macklem emphasized that the rate adjustment is intended to contain these pressures and bring inflation back toward the bank’s two per cent target more quickly.

Despite the increase, Macklem maintained that borrowing costs remain sufficiently low to support economic activity without significantly restricting growth. However, the decision presents challenges as Canada’s economy continues to face a weak labour market and broader economic uncertainty. Higher interest rates could help moderate inflation but may also discourage consumer spending and business investment, potentially slowing economic growth.

The central bank’s latest move reflects its efforts to balance inflation control with economic stability amid volatile global energy markets. Policymakers will continue monitoring inflation trends, employment conditions and international developments to determine whether further adjustments are necessary. The Bank of Canada’s next interest rate announcement is scheduled for December 9, when officials will reassess economic conditions and the outlook for inflation.
