Officials Share Condolences Over Officer Tarun Bali Death Case, Suspect In Custody

Ontario Provincial Police and public officials across Canada are mourning the loss of Constable Tarun Bali, who was killed in the line of duty while serving in northern Ontario.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree expressed his condolences, saying he was saddened to learn of the death of the 29-year-old officer in Hearst, a community located approximately 520 kilometres east of Thunder Bay.

According to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, Const. Bali was struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon while officers were conducting an investigation. He later succumbed to his injuries.

An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested and faces charges of first-degree murder, dangerous driving, and flight from police. Carrique noted that additional details may emerge as the investigation progresses, but those are the charges currently laid against the accused.

Tributes have poured in from across the province, including messages from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, OPP leadership, and the union representing the force’s uniformed and civilian members.

Const. Bali had served with the OPP for two and a half years. While assigned to the Dufferin Detachment in central Ontario, he was temporarily deployed with the James Bay Detachment at the time of the incident.

His death comes just weeks after the loss of another OPP officer, Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, who died in a collision involving a motorcycle on Highway 401 near Cobourg in early May.

Carrique described Bali as a committed officer and valued teammate. After meeting with the constable’s family, he shared a touching memory of seeing a photograph of Bali as a two-year-old child saluting a picture of a police officer, suggesting that policing had long been his calling.

“The reality of this job hits hard when we lose one of our own,” Carrique said, noting that officers across Ontario put themselves at risk every day to protect their communities.

David Sabatini, president of the OPP Association, extended condolences to Bali’s family, friends, and colleagues, calling the tragedy a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face in the line of duty. He pledged the association’s continued support for those affected by the loss.

Bali is being remembered as a dedicated public servant who committed his life to helping others and serving his community.
