Bata India Reports 30% Jump In Quarterly Profit Amid Strong Footwear Demand

Footwear retailer Bata India reported a 30.4 per cent increase in its second-quarter profit on Tuesday, driven by strong consumer demand for premium shoes and sneakers. The company recorded a consolidated net profit of 181.2 million rupees (US$1.91 million) for the quarter ending September 30, compared with 139 million rupees during the same period last year. Revenue from operations also increased by approximately 7.5 per cent to 8.62 billion rupees, reflecting improved sales across its footwear categories.

The company, which markets popular brands including Hush Puppies and North Star, has been expanding its focus on casual footwear and athleisure products to appeal to younger consumers. With more than 2,000 stores across India, including franchise locations, Bata is positioning itself to benefit from recovering consumer demand following recent consumption tax reductions.

Bata previously indicated that a delayed monsoon season had shifted some expected sales from the April-June quarter into the July-September period, contributing to stronger second-quarter performance. However, operating expenses also increased to 8.55 billion rupees from 7.95 billion rupees a year earlier, reflecting higher business costs alongside revenue growth.

Looking ahead, Bata India expects its positive sales momentum to continue into the third quarter, supported by festive-season shopping. The company noted that the shift in festive business toward the October-December period could further strengthen demand, particularly for its premium, casual and athleisure footwear collections.
