Dr Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has informed a Chandigarh court that she has no objection to removing Justice Ranjit Singh from the list of defendants in a defamation lawsuit she filed against several individuals. Her counsel, Advocate Sukhbir Singh, told the court that Kaur was unaware of Justice Ranjit Singh’s complete statement when the case was initiated and maintained that she had not deliberately concealed any information.
The lawsuit was originally filed against Justice Ranjit Singh, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira and DD News anchor Bhawna Nair. According to Kaur’s lawyer, Justice Ranjit Singh subsequently clarified that the statement published by Nair was incomplete and did not accurately represent his remarks. He also maintained that he had never intended to defame Kaur. However, Kaur’s counsel argued that Justice Ranjit Singh had failed to respond to a legal notice issued on August 22, 2026, leaving her unaware of his complete position before filing the lawsuit.
Kaur’s lawyer stated that she would not oppose Justice Ranjit Singh’s removal from the case, provided he did not object to the removal of Bhawna Nair’s allegedly incomplete publication from social media platforms. The court had previously lifted an interim injunction against Justice Ranjit Singh, observing that he could pursue compensation for an injunction obtained on insufficient grounds.
Meanwhile, Justice Ranjit Singh’s counsel, Advocate Charanjit Singh Bakshi, opposed Kaur’s position, arguing that she had failed to conduct reasonable inquiries before initiating legal proceedings against his client. Justice Ranjit Singh has also sought compensation under Section 95 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, which addresses injunctions obtained on insufficient grounds. The Chandigarh court has adjourned the matter until November 25 for further arguments.
