King Charles III is set to meet Donald Trump and address the U.S. Congress in a high-profile effort to reinforce ties between the United Kingdom and the United States during a period of political tension.
The address marks a historic moment, making Charles the first British monarch to speak before Congress since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991. His remarks are expected to highlight shared democratic values and the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
The congressional speech will be one of the central moments of the King’s four-day visit to the U.S., which is also intended to coincide with the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary of independence. Such invitations are rare and typically extended only to globally significant figures, including past addresses by leaders like Winston Churchill.
Earlier in the day, Charles, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House, followed by a state banquet in the evening. While the meeting is expected to remain largely ceremonial, it comes against the backdrop of strained relations between Washington and London.
Tensions have escalated in recent months, particularly between Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, over issues including the war in Iran, trade disputes, and differing foreign policy priorities. Trump has criticized Starmer’s leadership and imposed tariffs on British goods, while also warning of additional levies tied to the U.K.’s digital services tax.
The broader transatlantic relationship has also been tested by U.S. positions on NATO and trade, as well as rhetoric directed at allies including Canada.
Despite the challenges, U.S. lawmakers have expressed hope that the King’s visit could help stabilize relations. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries suggested the visit may help repair diplomatic strains, while others have urged the monarch to address broader global concerns during his speech.
The royal visit will continue later this week with stops in New York City and Virginia, as Charles seeks to underscore enduring ties between the two longtime allies.
