Political leaders reject Donald Trump’s suggestion of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state, defending sovereignty

8th Jan: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked debate by suggesting Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. He even hinted at using “economic force” to make this happen, claiming it would eliminate trade deficits, lower taxes, and enhance security against threats from Russia and China.

Trump first introduced the idea during talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and later reignited the topic on Truth Social after Trudeau announced his resignation. Trump argued that merging the two nations would create a stronger, unified economy and ensure Canada’s safety.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed the idea during a press conference with a humorous counteroffer, suggesting Canada should instead “buy Alaska” and include Minnesota and Minneapolis in the deal. Ford’s remarks highlighted Canada’s commitment to sovereignty, rejecting the proposal as unrealistic.

Trump’s comments have drawn mixed reactions from Canadians, with many viewing them as provocative and impractical. Canadian leaders remain firm in defending the country’s independence and self-governance.
